What can you do?
Open a Window to measure heart rate, receive possible alerts about rising activation, start a Timeout, and label feelings and episodes. Your phone shows history and insights. The personal model needs labelled episodes with enough data; it does not know you on day one.
An optional iPhone microphone feature analyses sound characteristics on the device. By default it is limited to your home area while a Window is open. It does not transcribe conversations or save audio recordings. You control permissions.
What does local processing mean?
Appit does not receive your heart rate, episodes or sound analysis. Your watch and phone exchange data to run the app. Apple Health is used with the permissions you grant. Some model settings may be included in your device backup; local processing is therefore not a promise that no data can ever exist in an Apple backup. Read the privacy policy.
What do we not promise?
Timeout does not diagnose conditions or assess your partner. It has no established guarantee of detecting flooding or preventing arguments. Alerts can be wrong or absent. We have not published clinical studies of the app’s effectiveness.
Measurement uses HealthKit’s workout mechanism without saving a workout. Its effect on Activity rings and battery life over a full day still needs documenting. The app is made for adults. It does not replace a doctor, psychologist or therapist.
Why was it made?
Trond Klæboe first built Timeout for himself: a tool to notice his own body signals and remember to take a break. The idea draws on literature about physiological activation and self-regulation. Timeout is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Gottman Institute.
How we create the guides
Appit AS publishes this site. The text was prepared with AI assistance, with sources alongside substantive claims. Product facts were checked against the app’s code and App Store listing. The guides are general information, not personalised treatment advice or a clinical peer review. Examples and the pause agreement are our own suggestions.
